Medium vase – Raku

Raku is a centuries-old ceramic technique with roots in Japan, celebrated for its ability to create one-of-a-kind, organic shapes and distinctive glaze finishes through extreme temperature shifts. The process begins by heating the ceramic piece to nearly 1,000 degrees Celsius in a kiln. It is then swiftly removed from the kiln and placed in open air to cool, causing the glaze to crack in a dramatic pattern known as craquele. Often, the piece is then transferred to a smoke chamber, where it is exposed to the smoke from burning materials such as wood or newspaper. This interaction between the smoke and the unglazed clay creates a unique, smoky patina and alters the piece’s colour, ensuring no two items are ever alike.

The Medium vase beautifully exemplifies this technique. It features soft brown and beige tones, with subtle speckling created by the flames during the firing process. Patterns formed by the raku process add depth and character to the design. Perfect for showcasing flowers or as an ornamental piece, the medium vase brings a touch of earthy elegance to any space, standing out with its distinctive artistry and timeless appeal. Keep in mind that if you want to put water in the vase, you need to place a (jam) jar in the vase. Due to the Raku firing technique, the vase itself is too porous to hold water.
